Welcome to the
YAP Research Site

The Youth Activity Profile is an online self-report instrument designed to both assess and promote physical activity in youth.

This page is designed to share the foundations for the YAP calibration method and to facilitate sharing and collaboration among researchers interested in using the YAP.

Background
The Youth Activity Profile (YAP) was developed to facilitate the assessment and promotion of physical activity in schools. While there are many fancy monitors and technologies for assessing physical activity, teachers and school leaders need a simple and practical way to help students evaluate their activity patterns and to learn about physical activity. The YAP was developed to address this need.

The assessment uses a series of simple questions to capture student's physical activity and sedentary behaviors. However, the novel aspect of the tool is that the assessment is that the responses are calibrated to enable the group-level estimates to match data obtained with physical activity monitors. The YAP has demonstrated utility for both researchers and practitioners and is now available to support assessment of physical activity in youth (see www.youthactivityprofile.org).

The original methods were developed using a print version of the YAP but subsequent research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, enabled calibration and validation of the online version of the tool. The current prediction algorithms are embedded within the online tool, but complementary work by other researchers have also informed research with the YAP.

The page here provides information on the overall vision for ongoing work to further refine the YAP and a channel for researchers to collaborate on this effort. See the list of collaborators and browse the various applications.
